About the Book

Book:  Love’s Mountain Quest

Author: Misty M Beller

Genre:  Historical romance

Release Date: June 30, 2020

After losing her husband in the Rocky Mountain wilderness, LovesMountainQuestyoung widow Joanna Watson is struggling to make a new home for her five-year-old son, Samuel, in the little mountain town of Settler’s Fort. When she returns home from work to find Samuel and the woman watching him missing–and the sheriff dead–she enlists a man she prays has enough experience in this rugged country to help.

Isaac Bowen wants nothing more than a quiet, invisible life in these mountains, far away from the bad decisions of his past. But he has a strong suspicion of who’s behind the kidnapping and murder, and if he’s right, he knows all too well the evil they’re chasing.

As they press on against the elements, Joanna fights to hold on to hope, while Isaac knows a reckoning is coming. They find encouragement in the tentative trust that grows between them, but whether it can withstand the danger and coming confrontation is far from certain in this wild, unpredictable land.

My Review

A true page turner. Whenever there is a child involved, the interest factor increases. Add an innocent woman trapped with a bunch of thieves and a furious, fretful mother. The plot explodes with the hazards of a chase through the mountains and a race against time.

Beller’s books never fail to place the reader in the thick of the wilderness and the mountain hardships. Yet, the beauty and majesty, as well as the settlers of the past, are evident and a draw for the reader. She takes me on journeys I would never have attempted (I don’t think so) through the rugged, uncivilized terrain. I challenge the reader to explore and decide if the challenge is worth the sacrifice.

The Story Behind the Story: Love’s Mountain Quest

Love’s Mountain Quest was one of the hardest books I’ve ever written, even though I LOVE Isaac and Joanna and their story. What made this book so hard was the fact that I wrote most of the story during my third trimester of pregnancy with our son!

Our little Matthew is our fourth baby (and first boy), so I was VERY heavy with child during the last three months I carried him, and that was the time that I’d scheduled to write Love’s Mountain Quest. Needless to say, the words were not flowing very well. My creativity was as exhausted as the rest of me! I could see Isaac and Joanna’s story in my mind, but showing it for readers using real words was the hard part.

Thankfully, I have an amazing editor at Bethany House (waving at Jen Veilleux!) who helped me massage the first draft, pushing both me and the story to be the very best we could be. Unfortunately for her, the edits for this book were the first bit of writing I did after taking a short maternity leave after the birth, so my brain was still a bit mushy from all the post-partum hormones and lack of sleep a newborn always brings. Jen’s patience through the process was remarkable, yet I so appreciate her determination not to stop until we had the very best book possible.

Our little Matthew just turned one, and Love’s Mountain Quest is finally making its way out into the world. Because of Jen, I’m so excited to share it with you! I can’t wait for you to meet the characters and story I love so much.

Summer Camp is Over

I spent the month of July writing 50,000 words on a novel. And, as of today I’ve written 50,560 words. So close to writing the end of Whispers of Wisdom, which is set in 1747 Chenonceau, France! Then, I will have my first draft ready for a serious edit.

IMG_E5165This is the third time I’ve joined National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo)! I’ve wanted to see how many hours a day I need to write to complete 50,000 words which is the length of a novella. There is a reason for this as I determine my next writing endeavor. I have an idea for a novella series that I will begin next month. For this I’m also considering a time split option. I’m not ready to reveal any more information at this time. I just know it will be fun to research and write something new.

As you wait for any new releases, I hope you will read all of the Revolutionary Faith books. The final book in the series will be released early 2021! Amazon: Revolutionary Faith Series

4 togetherMy other summer projects include painting rooms in a flip house and working in and expanding my garden.

Any accomplishments you want to share?

Birthday MONTH!

IMG_6346In my family, JULY has always been a month to celebrate. We start with July 4th celebrating our nation and freedoms. Then it moves steadily into a stream of celebrations. As a child, I loved it. Not only do I have a birthday in July, but it is/was/shall be cake month at our family gatherings.

IMG_6187 (1)My father has to share his birthday on July 14 with Bastille Day–the national patriotic day of France. My greeting to him for many years has been “Happy Bastille Day. Oh, and your birthday!” My sister’s birthday follows three days later and mine a week after that. My mother made homemade cakes for each birthday! What a fun month.

Now, July tends to be our family vacation time where all twenty of us try to get together. My parents’ anniversary and my sister’s anniversary fall in July. This year we are adding my niece’s wedding in two days!

IMG_6347Do you have a month that is happily congested with celebrations? Thank you for sharing this month with me. Blessings.

My Review

I’ve now read all three of these Austen Anthologies! Honestly, I could read ten of them and then start over. I enjoy reading six short novels with six different takes on Austen characters. Sometimes I’m laughing at the wit and antics of the characters performing at the author’s whim. Yet again, I cry at the true losses and challenges of being a woman in the 1800s.

Old favorites are back such as Elizabeth and Darcy. How much trouble they continue to find! I love Margaret Dashwood all grown up. I’m so glad Kitty Bennett has her own tale. I thought she’d never grow up. The imaginations of these authors continue to surprise and entertain me.

Thank you, ladies, for your expertise in the Austen arena. With these new twists on the Austen classics, our favorite characters will never die.

About the Authors

Robin Helm‘s books reflect her love of music, as well as her fascination with the paranormal and science fiction.

Previously published works include The Guardian Trilogy: Guardian, SoulFire, and Legacy; the Yours by Design series: Accidentally YoursSincerely Yours, and Forever YoursUnderstanding Elizabeth;  More to Love; and Lawfully Innocent. Ms. Helm also contributed stories to A Very Austen Christmas and A Very Austen Valentine.

She plans to publish Maestro in 2020.

Her life in (usually) sunny, small town South Carolina is busy, but affords time for writing, reading, teaching piano, and playing games on her phone. (Would you believe she’s an elder in a war game?)

Readers are loving Laura Hile‘s joyous Regency novels. Her signature style—with intertwined plots, cliffhangers, laugh-out-loud humor, and romance—keeps them coming back for more.

The comedy Laura comes by as a teacher. There’s never a dull moment with teen students!

Laura lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and a collection of antique clocks.

Her fiction is for everyone, even teens.

Wendi Sotis lives on Long Island, NY, with her husband and triplets. While searching for Pride and Prejudice from Darcy’s point of view, she became thoroughly enamored with Jane Austen Fan Fiction or JAFF. In early 2010, she dreamed of an idea for a story and hasn’t stopped writing since: PromisesDreams and ExpectationsAll Hallows EveThe Keys for LoveSafekeeping (with just a dash of Austen); The Gypsy BlessingFoundation of Love (The Gypsy Blessing 2); and A Lesson Hard Learned.

The Marriage Pact, and some of Wendi’s works-in-progress, have branched away from JAFF to Regency Romance (the Loving an Aldridge Series) and Contemporary Romantic Mysteries (the Implicated series). Wendi will also continue bringing Darcy and Elizabeth together again and again in an unusual manner.

Barbara Cornthwaite lives in the middle of Ireland with her husband and children. She taught college English before “retiring” to do something she loves far more; her days are now filled with homeschooling her six children, trying to keep the house tidy (a losing battle), and trying to stay warm in the damp Irish climate (also a losing battle). She is surrounded by medieval castles, picturesque flocks of sheep, and ancient stone monuments. These things are unappreciated by her children, who are more impressed by traffic jams, skyscrapers, and hot weather.

Mandy Cook was an RN for over ten years, half of which she served in the Navy, living in far-flung places, enjoying experiencing the world while following her calling. Just before she and her handsome Marine were both deployed to different places, they married. They now have three children, ages five and younger.

She previously published The Gifted, using her nursing experience to lend accuracy to her story about an ER nurse who is handed a gift that changes her life forever. Adversity, and a long history of secrets, constantly battle against her natural instinct for truth and justice, but will the truth be worth the dare?

Mandy also contributed a story to A Very Austen Valentine: Austen Anthologies, Book 1.

Chautona Havig lives in an oxymoron, escapes into imaginary worlds that look startlingly similar to ours and writes the stories that emerge. An irrepressible optimist, Chautona sees everything through a kaleidoscope of It’s a Wonderful Life sprinkled with fairy tales. Find her on the web and say howdy—if you can remember how to spell her name.

“H” Happies

IMG_6192My library is still an amazing place. At times, I just run my fingers along the covers, remembering the happy times with the books and authors. This week I’m sharing my “H” shelf with you. Please compare and tell me your favorite “H” authors.

Kristin Hannah presents the great challenge of relationships during a very difficult time in WWII in The Nightingale. I always learn so much from her novels.  Rachel Hauck earns a place on the shelf with How to Catch a Prince. Who doesn’t like a royal story?

Christmas on Breakers Point by Chautona Havig introduces a fun, entertaining multi-author series. I always learn new vocabulary and facts in Havig’s work. Jody Hedlund’s Newton and Polly is an inspiring novel of amazing grace. The novels I’m reading now by Hedlund are about princesses.

Anyone for mystery and suspense? Kristen Heitzmann never fails to add a bit of intrigue and The Still of Night is no exception. Robin Helm weaves a lovely tale of Elizabeth and Darcy in More to Love. I devour any of her Austen retellings.

Ah, then there is Ernest Hemingway’s The Complete Short Stories. My MA is in English, so he definitely has a place in my library. Liz Curtis Higgs’ Whence Came a Prince takes an Old Testament beloved story and sets a rendition of it in 1790 Scotland. I’ve read all her books!

A long time ago, I was introduced to Christian fiction with books like Three From Galilee by Marjorie Holmes. To me, she was a pioneer in this genre. Another author, Angela Elwell Hunt, takes Old Testament characters on an extended journey with her imagination in Brothers. The Biblical characters come to life.

IMG_6206I’ve followed Kristi Ann Hunter since her debut. The Haven Manor Book 1, A Defense of Honor, is a tribute to her ability to offer hope to the hopeless.

Please tell me if you have additional “H” authors or if one of your favorites is here.

A Stroll Down Memory Lane

Honestly, I miss vacations and the planning of vacations. Almost every year I go to Charleston, South Carolina because I ADORE this charming city. But, as you know, not much traveling is happening right now. COVID19 summer could be a bummer for travel. So far, I’m staying home except for jaunts to state parks and wide open places.

So, I stroll down memory lane with my pictures. Those blessed souvenirs of past travels. Why does Charleston come to mind when I’ve been many other places? Well, last year I spent a week there with my wonderful sisters. I can relive each day with them and return thankful that we had the time together.

I’ve also spent time in Charleston with my husband–early in our marriage and recently. While I enjoyed researching my novels, he found unique places and facts that made it into my books. The male perspective is good material every now and again.

About ten years ago, when my novels where just a speck in my cluttered brain, I found myself on a plane on my way to Charleston all by myself. I needed to find the connection between my ideas and the historical value. I found it in the streets of Charleston–the museum, the churches, the houses, the streets, the bookstores, the dungeon, the harbor.

The great thing about vacations (because they are over so quickly) is the memories. These I can conjure up at any point. The pictures sure do help. As I’m waiting to be able to fly away to a fun destination, the stroll flowing with memories will have to suffice.

How about you? Are you vacationing this summer? Where? If not, what past vacations are you remembering? Enjoy the stroll.

July 4th Celebration Giveaway

July Giveaway 2020Happy 4th of July! It’s a privilege to celebrate our Independence Day. To add to the celebration, I am giving away to a US resident a copy of one of two novels. They that take place pre American Revolution: Bring Me Near: Revolutionary Faith Book Three (1775) and A Heart Set Free (1770) by Janet S. Grunst.

Leave a comment, perhaps about July 4th or a way that you celebrate, for a chance to win.

Good Luck!

July Camp–NaNoWriMo

KPOQ8333July is here, and I’m so excited about summer camp. Well, a different kind of camp. I’m participating  in the NaNoWriMo Camp where I join other authors on a vigorous journey through the writing world, the highs and lows, the ravines and hills, and hopefully a mountain or two. Each camper has his/her own goal. Mine is a rigorous 50,000 words–new words.

National Novel Writing Month is one of my favorite things to do. I will admit I’ve only done this twice before with success. Why? This is a place I can be held accountable for my goal and my words. That might seem silly because it’s a completely online environment. There are other “people” lurking just like me who need a place to record their words and progress. Each region has a cheering squad where we encourage each other to push forward.

IMG_5960I will post my progress occasionally. As of this moment, I’ve written 2210 words! Woo Hoo! But it is a start, right?

My goal is to complete Whispers of Wisdom (#3 in Gardens in Time) and begin a fun new series yet to be announced. I have my items of inspiration: books, pictures, maps, and vision board. I love the destination, Château de Chenonceau in France. Set in 1747 with the beautiful gardens and the River Cher as the background, my characters are experiencing some interesting scenarios with scheming and intrigue within the grounds they tend.

As I enjoy camp each day, I hope you have some of your own goals and projects for this month. Please share!!!
