Siblings in Fiction (and Life)

IMG_0699Do you like reading fiction that has a protagonist with siblings? Well, I do probably because I have three sisters who are now my best friends. I’m sure some people who do not have siblings have friends or cousins who are as close as sisters or brothers. Anyway, I love reading and writing about the dynamics of family. Siblings expand the depth of the characters. I know my siblings have added levels of purpose and blessings to my life.

I have a motto for my siblings–From cradle to grave. I read that somewhere years ago and have found it to be so very true. We shared our nursery years, and we are in this life together until death. Our journey is forever linked. My sisters have added other sayings that appear on my shelves. Here are two: “Back off! I have a sister and I’m not afraid to use her.” “Sister love isn’t made out of cupcakes and glitter. More like steel and a set of snow tires. It went the extra mile a long while back, and it’s not going to quit. Not tomorrow, not ever.”

IMG_3691Therefore, in my novels I like to throw in a few siblings to spice things up a bit. In the Revolutionary Faith series, Elizabeth has an older sister Anne and a younger brother George. Can you guess which one gives her more trouble? I won’t tell. She also has a best friend Sarah who steps in as a sister, sharing the bond as sisters do.

Louis, in the same series, has two brothers in France. Being the middle child, he finds an ocean apart is the best way to exist with his brothers. Only through time will the rifts begin to mend.

little womenIn fiction my favorite sisters are the March girls from Little Women–four sisters facing the world. I can relate. And I wouldn’t change a thing about my own sisters! True darlings with extremely loving and forgiving hearts.

Join my characters on a journey with their families–siblings, parents, children, friends. The four books continue to emphasize the importance of the bonds of love. Hold Me Close, Surround Me, Bring Me Near, and now Draw Me to Your Side.

Do you have siblings or friends as close as siblings?

About the Book

Book:  The Fifth Avenue Story Society

Author: Rachel Hauck

Genre:  Contemporary Romance/ Women’s Fiction

Release Date: February 4, 2020

An invitation to join The Fifth Avenue Story Society gives The Fifth Avenue Story Societyfive New York strangers a chance to rewrite their own stories.

Executive assistant Lexa is eager for a much-deserved promotion, but her boss is determined to keep her underemployed.

Literature professor Jett is dealing with a broken heart, as well as a nagging suspicion his literary idol, Gordon Phipps Roth, might be a fraud.

Uber driver Chuck just wants a second chance with his kids.

Aging widower Ed is eager to write the true story of his incredible marriage.

Coral, queen of the cosmetics industry, has broken her engagement and is on the verge of losing her great grandmother’s multimillion-dollar empire.

When all five New Yorkers receive an anonymous, mysterious invitation to the Fifth Avenue Story Society, they suspect they’re victims of a practical joke. No one knows who sent the invitations or why. No one has heard of the literary society. And no one is prepared to bear their deepest secrets to a roomful of strangers.

Yet curiosity and loneliness bring them back week after week to the old library. And it’s there they discover the stories of their hearts, and the kind of friendship and love that heals their souls.

My Review

How does a story society benefit the anonymously invited participants? These reluctant, seemingly randomly selected people decide to gather each week to figure out the purpose. Although a difficult task, the author develops five main characters. Eventually, they bring their imperfect lives and problems to their safe circle of acquaintances. Can they become friends and discern the purpose of their group? With no guidelines, the men and women struggle with the idea of opening up to each other.

Real life is exposed in this original format and plot. I feel the loneliness, frustration, bitterness, anger, failure, ambition, and impatience working alongside love, forgiveness, success, friendship, marriage, family, and hope. It makes me want to be invited to a secret society, especially in an old library surround by ancient volumes of antique books.

This novel is a treasure of stories about hope and God’s plans for our futures even considering our not so inviting pasts.

Characters Revisited!

IMG_0688As the release of Draw Me to Your Side draws near (February 25), I want to revisit the characters introduced in the first three books of the Revolutionary Faith series and share a few images of the historic characters and possible actors and faces to give more insight.

Louis Lestarjette portrait

Let’s start with the dashing Frenchman, Louis Lestarjette. Well, of course the hero would be dashing and handsome. He is twenty-six, five-foot-eleven, with olive skin, dark hair, and blue eyes. And did I mention French! Straight off the ship, he lands in Charles Town with no other purpose than to make a profit. Confident, self-motivated, unattached, wandering, unsettled, educated, fashionable. A man of ideas, fleeing the strings of family and an older brother. Oops, he lands in a city of unrest which is definitely not part of his plans, neither is Elizabeth Elliott.

outlandercast-1559057083Why not choose Jamie to portray Louis! It’s fine with me to have this handsome man play a Frenchman!

Elizabeth
The historical Elizabeth

So, Elizabeth Elliott is the daughter of a Loyalist family originally from Boston and now of Charles Town. A beautiful eighteen-year-old finds herself with beliefs contradicting her father. What’s a girl to do?  She is an elegant five-foot-five with light brown curly hair and blue-gray eyes. Schooled in music and the education of young society girls, she has her heart set on a family of her own with a love-match if possible. Not a revolution, nor a Frenchman, existing far from a believer’s purpose. I ask again, what’s a girl to do? Now, if the image above of Jamie faced me every day…it makes it even harder.

outlander image of claireEvery Jamie needs a Claire. They’d make a fine Louis and Elizabeth, don’t you think?

Included is a short story, only available with this offer.

Following is the back cover for Draw Me to Your Side:

Warships in the harbor explode with battle cries for freedom in the hearts of Charles Town’s Patriots.

Charles Town, South Carolina, 1776—With the British war ships threatening his family and livelihood, Louis Lestarjette commits to aid Francis Marion, Christopher Gadsden, Silas Deane and other fiery Patriots with secret correspondences in code and in French. Although not convinced that the colonies can succeed in separation from Britain, he abides by his word—available with funds, his time, and if necessary, even his life.

Louis’ potential volatile role leaves Elizabeth Lestarjette uncertain of the future. Add to that her impending confinement, the secret missions her friends embark on, and the ever-encroaching danger into her domestic world, and the cost of independence grows steeper with each passing day. How will her family survive the coming turbulence? How will she survive not being an active part of it? One thing is certain, she must draw to God’s side or lose heart altogether.

Draw Me to Your Side… a prayer whispered against the coming destruction.
