Revolutionary Faith

Oh, to have revolutionary faith! As I wrote my Revolutionary Faith series, I often asked myself if I have that kind of faith. The faith to see me through a major war. The faith to protect my family at all costs. The faith that does not waver in the face of the darkest hours. I must admit my answers to the question varied depending on my circumstances. But should it have?

“Faith is the substance of things hoped for and the evidence of things to come.”

Revolutionary faith sounds huge. But the participants in the American Revolution were humans with human weaknesses and flaws and faith that had to face the British Army–the greatest army on earth. How did they do it? One day at a time. One obstacle at a time.

My characters lived during a war with battles outside the walls of the city and later in their harbor with a siege and occupation. What would that faith look like? I think the citizens had lots of questions about where God was during the chaos of their lives. Had He deserted them? What did He expect them to do?

I always ask God questions.  Maybe my faith is no less revolutionary than ones who go through a major war. These people wondered from where their food, clothing, and shelter would come. Add to this actual physical fighting, death, disease, and maimed bodies. There really was no one to trust except God. He knew all the answers, and He still does.

I’d like to think I could have existed through this war and kept my faith. Even in this modern world, I face those circumstances that I cannot conquer or solve. When my children are hurting. When someone I love faces illness. When financial woes break a family’s spirit. When someone loses a job. When death invades a family.

Do you have revolutionary faith? I think we all do if we put our trust and belief in God. Our circumstances are different, but faith is equal to the task.

Productive Hibernation

Productive Hibernation. It doesn’t seem like those two words would go together. But for me, they do. For about fifteen years, I’ve noticed that I suffer from January Blues. I can’t really blame that on extreme cold or extreme weather since I am in sometimes balmy Louisiana. Nevertheless, I do tend to hibernate. I find that is the best way to face my blues.

With my blues, I want to be at home with a blanket and hot tea when I am not working. Since I’m a teacher, my days are full, so I’m not talking about many hours to hibernate. I avoid outside commitments for one month–meetings, events, gatherings can wait. I surround myself with books and research, my cats, healthy snacks, and good movies.

Yet, this January is the first time I have practiced productive hibernation. I have a HUGE deadline on January 31. When writing, authors work solo. What better way to hibernate! When its cold outside, I write. When there’s a meeting, I write. When I’m fighting the blues, I write.

I think I’m going to make January of every year a productive one–without the overwhelming deadline though. I must say this year I’ve had fun hiding away in my house in comfy socks and my writing pad.

Do you suffer from January blues? What do you do to make it through?

Oh, I almost forgot. The early flowers blooming in my yard inspire me and promise me that spring in arriving soon. This year I might even miss my hibernation.

My Review

Another thought-provoking, action-packed novel of the West before modern man left a permanent mark on the landscape. The author presents a daughter’s unselfish gift to her dying father. This tugged at my heart, making me contemplate how far I would go or do go to make the dreams of my family and friends become a reality? In the light of this dramatic example, I am challenged to make a better effort, to step out of my comfort zone in order to reach the dreams right out of reach. The love imparted by complete strangers to a young woman and her ailing father reinforces the truth of the good residing in humans from all eras. Thank you, Misty Beller for a heartfelt journey.

When God Directs a Google Search…

I’m a history lover, but you may have guessed that since I write historical romance stories. 😊 Most of my books are set in the Rocky Mountains during the mid-1800s, but as I began brainstorming ideas for this new series, my heart became drawn earlier to the earlier part of the century—a time period with which I wasn’t quite as familiar with the history.

I love when God orchestrates even the most mundane part of our lives, including Google searches! During one particular search (I can’t even remember what I was originally looking for), I stumbled across part of a journal entry from the Lewis and Clark expedition, which trekked across Montana during the time period I was looking into. I’d forgotten that expedition had even entered the territory that would later become Montana, but now I was fascinated.

After finding an audiobook of the abridged journals of Lewis and Clark, I happily listened to almost 19 hours of fascinating stories from the Corp of Exploration’s journey up the Missouri River and across the mountains to the Pacific Ocean, then back mostly the over the same path they’d come. The stories the men told were so amazing, and the detail of their trials so absorbing, I’ve actually re-listened to the audiobook twice! Many of the true tales wouldn’t be believable in fiction, but as I listened, my mind formed the premise for Freedom in the Mountain Wind: a father/daughter duo who sets out almost two decades after Lewis and Clark’s journey, determined to retrace the steps of that famous expedition.

I hope you enjoy this story as much as I loved writing it! And whether you’re a history lover or not, I pray that you too will be touched by this “epic journey through breathless landscapes and adventure so intense, lives will never be the same.”
